When should your tank be serviced?

You should get your oil tank serviced annually by a Registered Engineer with a ‘Competent Person Scheme’ around the same time your boiler is due a service.

What does a tank service consist of?

An OFTEC Registered Engineer will carry out a visual inspection and complete a risk assessment to report the condition of your tank. Your tank may be treated with additives to prevent microbial growth such as bacteria, viruses and fungi.

If the fuel is contaminated, a Registered Engineer will be able to identify whether your tank requires; cleaning, repairing or replacing along with the costs.

Ideal times to check your tank yourself:

At least once a month

Before you place a heating oil order

During cold weather conditions

Common signs of tank failure:

• Sludge formation

• Splits and cracks on the tank, gauge, pipework, valves or filters

• Rust around the tank

• Excessive dents around the tank

• Strong fume smells

• Oil spillages

Your oil storage tank must display a sticker that provide information on how to take care of your tank and what you should do in the event of any spillages. A Registered Engineer will place a sticker on the tank at the time of installation.
